UPN - In The House

ROB EDWARDS

Co-Executive Producer of
UPN's IN THE HOUSE

Rob Edwards is co-executive producer of In the House, a comedy series produced by Quincy Jones/David Salzman Entertainment in association with NBC Studios for broadcast on UPN.

Edwards has been a guiding force behind such high profile sitcoms as The Naked Truth, on which he served as supervising producer; Out All Night, the Patti Labelle project which he created; Roc, on which he held a co-executive producer title, and In Living Color, for which he received an Emmy nomination as a writer on the pilot. Other writing credits include The Fresh Prince of Bel Air, The Marshall Chronicles, A Different World and Full House.

Born and raised in Detroit, Edwards always wanted to be a writer, although his parents would have preferred he follow his father into medicine. At 12, while in boarding school, he had his own comic strip and eventually began writing plays and short stories.

While attending Syracuse University, he wrote and directed plays and student films. His inspiration came from high profile teachers such as Tobias Wolfe and fellow classmate Jay McInemy, whose first novel, "Bright Lights, Big City," was just being published. A self-professed "TV junkie," Edwards was motivated to try his work in Hollywood after seeing another black writer, Thad Mumford's, work on M*A*S*H. He contacted Mumford, who suggested Edwards move to Los Angeles during his school breaks.

In L.A., Edwards began writing freelance material for comedians in response to ads in DramaLogue. His work met with such popularity that he became a stand-up comic at the Ice House Comedy Club. He was a hit with his Cosby-style, guy next door appeal. He eventually returned to graduate before making the final move to Los Angeles.

Upon his return, Edwards quickly got a job on Mary Tyler Moore's sitcom Mary as a production assistant. He wrote a Cheers spec script, and sent it around the studio to everyone he met. His persistence paid off and he was hired to write an episode of New Love American Style. Through word of mouth, he started getting calls. His next job was as a story editor for the series Better Days, and he has been a working writer/producer ever since.

Edwards and his wife Michele, a talent manager, have a four-year-old son, Joseph.

In the House is taped before a studio audience in Hollywood, California and is a production of Quincy Jones/David Salzman Entertainment in association with NBC Studios for broadcast on UPN.
