KAME-TV, which had been a UPN secondary affiliate since network sign-on Monday, January 16, 1995, recently made the switch to a UPN primary affilation. The station upgrade doesn't affect UPN's total network clearance, which stands at more than 93% of all U.S. television viewing households.
In making this announcement, Mt. Tannehill commented, "This announcement, coming as it does on the heels of the news that we'd added WLYH-TV in Harrisburg, PA, as a primary affiliate, reinforces our aggressive distribution strategy. We'll continue to persue new stations, affiliate upgrades and strategic alliances wherever possible."
KAME-TV is a COX operated station in the Reno market. Kevin O'Brien, the stations general manager, stated "KAME has a distinguished record of serving the Reno community and the addition of UPN as a full-time affiliate will make our station that much more meaningful." He continued, "We're thrilled to be associated with a network that has made significant inroads in such a short period of time and we're very excited to be part of the Reno community."
UPN premiered on Monday, January 16, with 102 affiliates covering 81% of all U.S. television viewing households. In less than a year, network distribution has enlisted 50 new affiliates to the UPN roster, increasing total coverage of the U.S. by more than 12%.
UPN currently offers two nights of original primetime programming Monday and Tuesday evenings (8:00-10:00 p.m. ET/PT). In March 1996, a third night of programming will be added on Wednesdays. In addition, UPN broadcasts a two-hour weekend movie Saturday afternoons and an hour of children's programming Sunday mornings.
